Description
Karuizawa distillery, established in 1955 in Miyota, Japan, began producing single malt for Ocean blends from Daikoku Budoshu. Import restrictions were lifted in 1958, allowing the distillery to experiment with Speyside-esque products. The quality of output led to Karuizawa appearing in Japan as a single malt in the 1980s. Despite the weak Japanese whisky market, Karuizawa was closed in 2001 by Mercian owners and dismantled.
However, its legacy lives on through single cask releases from independent bottler, Number One Drinks. It is now one of the most prestige single malts globally, with reverence growing as remaining stock thins. This limited bottling consists of multi-vintage Cask Strength Karuizawa from the distillery’s final years of production, part of the 36 Views of Mount Fuji series. The first edition is The Great Wave.
