Description
Karuizawa distillery, established in 1955 in Miyota, Japan, began producing single malt for Ocean blends from Daikoku Budoshu. Import restrictions were lifted in 1958, allowing the distillery to experiment with Speyside-esque products. The quality of output led to Karuizawa appearing in Japan as a single malt in the 1980s. However, the Japanese whisky market was not strong at the time, leading to its closure in 2001. The distillery’s legacy lives on, with its single cask releases appearing in 2007 from independent bottler, Number One Drinks. It is now one of the most prestige single malts on the planet, with reverence growing as remaining stock thins.
